End of Watch -The Loss Of K-9 Deputy Taz

$

It is with great sadness that the Levy County Sheriff’s Office announces the loss of K-9 Deputy Taz. Taz passed away yesterday evening after a brief illness. Taz dedicated 9 years and 2 months of service to the LevyCounty citizens with his handler Corporal Willie “Pete” Barnes. Taz wore the badge with honor and dignity dedicating himself to thousands of hours of training. He served without hesitation, ready to hurl himself into harms way at a moments notice or give demonstrations for children at community events.
Taz was a dual certified K-9 Deputy assisting in both apprehension and narcotic detection. Taz was responsible for the apprehension of multiple fleeing felons; locating lost and endangered children and numerous narcotic and asset seizure cases of currency, vehicles and weapons during his tenure. Corporal Barnes and the Levy County Sheriff’s Office will truly miss Taz and his service to our community has not gone unnoticed.

Operation “Bronson Ink”

On May 9, 2013 the Levy County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force (DTF) began investigating street level drug sales in the Bronson area. Dubbed “Bronson Ink”, investigators utilized confidential informants to make 68 cases resulting in 148 charges from 30 defendants.  Informants purchased a myriad of narcotics including crack and powder cocaine, prescription medications including oxycodone, marijuana, Molly and one firearm. The DTF concluded their investigation on August 21, 2013 and with a “slow and steady” pace began arresting the suspects, picking them off one by one. To date, 21 suspects have been taken into custody, 19 of which are pictured above. The remaining few have pending warrants for their arrest.
Sheriff McCallum said he could not be more proud of his men and women who undertake the task of enforcing drug laws and seek these violators who sell illegal narcotics. These Deputies work relentlessly, enduring late nights and long hours to bring those who violate our drug laws to justice.

Club 212 “Out of Business”

In April of this year the Levy County Sheriff’s Office began receiving information that an illegal unlicensed night club had opened for operation off of NE 212 Court in Williston. Deputies began gathering information from citizen complaints and other sources. In August the LCSO joined forces with the Alcohol Beverage and Tobacco (ABT a State LEO Agency) and were able to confirm the majority of the information sources had supplied. It was determined that the owners/operators Eugene Donald and his wife Chrissi Donald were selling alcoholic beverages without a license and demanding a cover charge to enter into the structurally altered double wide trailer located in a usually quiet residential area. The FDLE, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Williston Police Department and Gainesville Police Department provided additional support to this investigation and were able to confirm information that illegal narcotic were being sold on the property.

On November 15 at approximately 11:30 pm the LCSO and ABT executed a search warrant on the 212 Club located at 3711 NE 212 Court Williston, Fl. Both Mr. and Mrs. Donald were arrested on various felony charges and booked into the Levy County Detention Facility. More charges are expected be filed at a later date. ABT seized 27 bottles of alcoholic beverages for evidence. Additionally, Antjuan Edwards was arrested for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon after Deputies encountered him inside during the execution of the warrant.

The LevyCountyBuilding and Zoning Department posted that the building was unsafe for occupancy and could not be reoccupied until the structural modifications needed to bring the building back into code compliance have been met.

Sheriff McCallum wanted to express his gratitude to all the agencies that assisted in this investigation and how much he appreciated the patience and assistance of the citizens who endured many sleepless nights. “We at the Sheriff’s Office hope that the citizens can now enjoy some peace and quite in their neighborhood”, Sheriff McCallum said.

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office is saddened to announce the loss of our Matron and Cook. Johnnie Mae Jackson went home to be with her Lord on Saturday January 18, 2014. She went peacefully while being surrounded by friends and family.

Johnnie Mae “Mama” Jackson 10-25-25 began her career with the Levy County Board of CountyCommissioners on June 17, 1969 working in maintenance and the jail cook for LCSO. She quickly became an icon of the jail, making sure all staff and inmates alike were well nourished. Everyone enjoyed “Mama” as she was known throughout our community. Although Mama officially retired on December 31, 1988 this did not end her tenure with the LCSO. She continued to volunteer until her declining health forced her to stay home only a few years ago.

Rest in Peace Mama. You will be missed.

Cooperation and conditioning at their finest.

Yesterday, March 4, 2014 the Florida Highway Patrol was monitoring traffic on CR 335 east of SR 41 in the Raleigh area of LevyCounty. Trooper Michael Corrao clocked a vehicle in excess of the posted speed limit and initiated a traffic stop. March 13, 2014

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office responded to Rivals Bar located at 439 Highway 40 West in Inglis, Fl., shortly before midnight on March 11, 2014. A patron called 911 reporting a fight between multiple people inside the bar. 911 communications officers continued updating Deputies as they responded. The 911 caller described a Jeep leaving the scene and told dispatchers the Jeep was occupied by the people involved in the fight.

A responding LCSO deputy located the vehicle east bound on SR 40 in the Town of Inglis. He turned around to conduct a traffic stop. As the deputy gained on the vehicle, he observed a person lying in the road. The deputy immediately stopped to render aid and observed the Jeep pull into an adjacent parking lot. Additional responding units contacted the driver and occupants. Statements taken on scene by Deputies determined the occupant jumped from the moving vehicle in an attempt to avoid apprehension.

The victim, a 39 year old Inglis resident succumbed to his injuries. His name is being withheld until proper family notification has been completed. The investigation is continuing.
